IES Lighting Basics Seminar @ Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology
Oct 16 @ 8:00 am – 12:00 pm

The IES Ottawa Section is offering Lighting Basics as a 1/2 day seminar on Wednesday, October 16th, 2019. The seminar will be held at Algonquin College, CA105A, from 8:00 am – 12:30 pm. Parking details will follow. Learning objectives are primarily based on material contained in the IES Ready Reference. Students will receive instructions on how to obtain and use the Ready Reference app for Android and iOS device. Each participant will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the class.

Lighting Basics aims to equip students with an understanding of basic lighting concepts, common lighting terminology, and an appreciation for some technologies used in today’s lighting designs. Students will learn about lighting metrics like lumens, footcandles, lux and candelas, as well as commons terms as they relate to lamps, ballasts, LED sources and drivers, and lighting fixtures, with an emphasis placed on understanding the basic concepts rather than in-depth technical discussions of the material.

“Lighting Basics” is an ideal introductory seminar for those who have little or no knowledge of lighting, making it ideal for newcomers to the industry, or for those who deal with lighting as a small part of their larger work responsibilities.  It is also an excellent preparatory course for those wishing to pursue more advanced courses in the future.

Seminar Instructor
 Bob Bridges, MIES, LC

Registration Fees for Lighting Basics

Non-Members: $139 + HST

IES Fundamentals of Lighting Course will be offered in November 2019

For those looking for something a little more in-depth, we will be offering a Fundamentals of Lighting course which will be offered as four full-day sessions on Thursdays (November 7,14, 21 & 28).  In addition to covering common lighting terms in greater detail, lighting fundamentals offers sessions on history, professional practice, physics, vision, color, light and health, light sources, ballasts and drivers, daylighting, luminaires, lighting controls, metrics and terminology, photometry, lighting calculation considerations, relevant codes and standards, economics, the lighting design process, sustainability, commissioning, and lighting applications for interiors and exteriors. Anyone who works in lighting or is planning on improving their overall lighting knowledge is encouraged to consider this course instead of lighting basics.

Registration information will be made available in late September, but you may pre-register now by email to Donna Boag.
