About the Presentation

In this presentation, we offer an overview of how the behavior of sound in architectural spaces can affect us as human beings, and we look into the principals of sound absorption and strategies used to mitigate excessive noise. We scrutinize the systems and units being used to evaluate sound absorption, and we examine the relevance of the NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating.

Lastly, we put into question some of the ways acoustic luminaires are being tested and address the challenges of comparing luminaires in the absence of regulatory requirements.

Learning Objective 1

Achieve an understanding of how sound absorption is determined by a number of factors in an enclosed environment.

Learning Objective 2

Examine the system being offered to measure sound and what to look for or be wary of in sound calculations.

Learning Objective 3

Understand the challenges that come with testing and comparing two luminaires.

Learning Objective 4

Looking into the benefits of sound mitigation to improve human performance.

About the Presenters

Michael Simla is the Chief Technology Officer at Lumenwerx. After he graduated from McGill University with a degree in mechanical engineering, Michael began his professional lighting career with a components manufacturer. As he immersed himself in the discipline and honed his skills, he caught the attention of the soon to be founder of Lumenwerx, Morris Feldman. In 2014, Michael joined the Lumenwerx team at the helm of the Technology division.

Michael’s innovative spirit has contributed greatly to the success of Lumenwerx, which has since been recognized with numerous product awards and accolades. In 2018, Michael was identified as one of the IALD’s celebrated 40 under 40 talents. Beyond his professional pursuits, Michael enjoys the challenges of long-distance running. He successfully completed the Boston Marathon in 2018.

Janine Mighton is the Marketing Strategist at Lumenwerx. Although she began her lighting career as a designer in 2001, she moved to the manufacturing side in 2007 where her interest in the industry grew even stronger. Janine works with several teams in an effort to bring forth relevant and strategic solutions for both product development and intelligent marketing programs. She is extremely passionate and inspired, enjoying a career punctuated by several awards in multiple sectors of the lighting industry, from product design to sales and marketing.

Both Michael and Janine were part of the Lumenwerx team that earned a highly coveted 2020 Red Dot Design Award for Product Design, not to mention a 2020 Product Innovation Award (PIA) for Audia, an acoustic luminaire.
